********************************************************************
     The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) today (October 28) announced that the Government Vaccination Programme (GVP) 2016/17 will be launched next Thursday (November 3) in phases, providing free seasonal influenza vaccination for expanded population groups in preparation for the winter influenza season.

     Speaking at a briefing, the Head of the Programme Management and Professional Development Branch of the CHP, Dr Henry Ng, said, "The GVP this year will be expanded to cover children aged 6 to under 12 years who have financial difficulties, and community-living persons receiving Disability Allowance (PDAs) regardless of disability."

     The eligible groups are Hong Kong residents detailed below:

  • Pregnant women who are Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients or Certificate for Waiver of Medical Charges (Certificate) holders can get vaccinated in Maternal and Child Health Centres (MCHCs) of the DH or Antenatal Clinics of the Hospital Authority (HA);

  • Children aged 6 months to under 12 years receiving CSSA or holding the Certificate can receive vaccination in MCHCs (6 months to under 6 years) and Student Health Service Centres of the DH (6 to under 12 years). Eligible school children can call the Student Health Service hotline (2856 9133) for telephone booking;

  • Community-living elderly aged 65 or above can get vaccinated in General Out-patient Clinics of the HA and designated Elderly Health Centres of the DH starting from November 14;

  • Eligible persons with intellectual disabilities and community-living PDAs, elderly aged 65 or above attending public clinics, CSSA recipients or the Certificate holders aged 50 to under 65 and those aged below 50 with chronic medical problems, eligible in-patients (including paediatric patients) of the HA and eligible paediatric out-patients can receive vaccination during their follow-up or stay in public clinics/hospitals; and

  • Residents of homes for the elderly and the disabled, public/institutional healthcare workers, poultry workers and pig farmers can get vaccinated accordingly.

     Regarding the Vaccination Subsidy Scheme (VSS) (subsidised vaccination) launched on October 20, over 20 000 doses of seasonal influenza vaccines have so far been administered.

     Under the VSS, enrolled private doctors can provide subsidised vaccination to eligible groups in their clinics, or organise outreach vaccination activities. About 100 doctors have indicated their interest in providing outreach activities. The list of doctors is available online for easy reference. To date, around 200 notifications of outreach vaccination activities have been received, including outreach activities in 45 primary schools.

     "We again strongly appeal to eligible groups of both the GVP and the VSS for early vaccination before the influenza season arrives. Other members of the public should consult their family doctors on vaccination for personal protection," Dr Ng said.

     The public, especially eligible groups, may call the CHP's hotline (2125 2125) for enquiries during office hours or visit the vaccination schemes page for more information.
