Stay away from drugs when participating in social and leisure activities
************************************************************************
As the mask mandate has been fully lifted and Hong Kong has resumed normalcy in full, more and more large-scale entertainment events and social gatherings are being held in the city. Members of the public should firmly say no to all drugs at all times when having a good time at those social and leisure activities, so as to avoid ending up breaking the law.
The spokesperson for the ND reminded that "cannabis is a drug". It can cause serious damage to health, including addiction, hallucinations, IQ loss and impairment, depression, decreased concentration, sensory distortions, and even heart attacks and strokes for young cannabis abusers. In addition, cannabidiol (CBD) has been listed as a dangerous drug and regulated under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance (DDO) (Cap. 134) since February 1, 2023. Members of the public should stay away from it and any illegal acts involving drugs.
The spokesperson also urged, "Organisers and participants of large-scale events should be alert to possible crimes involving drugs and report them immediately."
Members of the public can call the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF)'s drug reporting hotline 2527 1234 or the Customs and Excise Department (C&ED)'s hotline 2545 6182 if they have any information about drugs such as cannabis, CBD, "Ice", cocaine, ecstasy, heroin, ketamine, etc.
The HKPF and the C&ED will continue their efforts to combat drug crimes. In accordance with the DDO, the maximum penalties for drug trafficking are life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million, while seven years' imprisonment and a fine of $1 million for illegal possession and consumption.
The website of the ND (www.nd.gov.hk) contains detailed information about drugs. To seek information or assistance from social workers, members of the public can also make use of instant messaging applications "WhatsApp" and "WeChat" by sending messages to 98 186 186, or call the 24-hour hotline 186 186.
