Police hold professional training to enhance cybersecurity of critical infrastructures (with photos)

     The Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) of the Hong Kong Police Force held the "Cyber Attack and Defence Elite Training (CADET) 2022/23 – Professional Series" training course at the business solution hub DIGIBox of 3 Hong Kong today (January 6), kicking off the "All-round CyberDefence" campaign held between January and March this year. It was the Force's first cybersecurity incident response training with international security operation centres for the major local critical infrastructures. Over 70 cybersecurity practitioners and management representatives participated. The programme aims to maintain close co-operation with stakeholders in the industry and enhance the cybersecurity level of local critical infrastructures as a whole.

     Speaking at the opening remarks, the Senior Vice President of Enterprise Market of Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Limited, Ms Jess Mak, said that cyberattacks had been growing in variety and strength in recent years. Three years into the pandemic, several significant cyberattacks against critical infrastructures were noticed worldwide, and the threats posed to cybersecurity should not be ignored. The Superintendent of the CSTCB, Mr Wilson Tam, also pointed out in the closing remarks that cyberattacks on critical infrastructures could lead to possible leakages of sensitive information and pose a serious threat to the operation of society. Hence, incident response capability of cybersecurity practitioners and their management was pivotal.

     The Chairman of Hong Kong Capture The Flag Association, Mr Frankie Leung, shared with the management representatives on the latest cybersecurity trends. In addition to social engineering attacks, malware attacks and security risks brought by emerging technologies, Mr Leung believed that the biggest threats went to the lack of cybersecurity awareness and human error.

     A simulated real-world cybersecurity incident training platform was established by the CSTCB for the programme this year. Practitioners had to identify and detect threats, respond, protect and recover the corresponding computer systems. In addition to the hands-on practice provided to the practitioners, the programme also offered opportunity for exchanges and experience sharing among the management representatives.

     The CSTCB is holding a cybersecurity campaign "All-round CyberDefence" between January and March this year to enhance the public’s cybersecurity awareness, technology crime awareness and capability in identifying harmful content.
