APEC holds Capacity Building Workshop on APEC's Goals of Doubling Renewable Energy Share in Energy Mix and Reducing Energy Intensity in Hong Kong via video conferencing (with photo)

Delivering the opening remarks at the workshop yesterday, the Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Mr Tse Chin-wan, said that with a view to aligning with the national "dual carbon" targets, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is striving to achieve carbon neutrality before 2050 and reduce the total carbon emissions from the 2005 level by half before 2035. Hong Kong will tackle the carbon emissions problem at source through four major strategies, namely "net-zero electricity generation", "energy saving and green buildings", "green transport" and "waste reduction". The Government will also set up a new Office of Climate Change and Carbon Neutrality to strengthen co-ordination and promote work such as deep decarbonisation.
He said that Hong Kong was honoured to host this workshop, which gathered APEC member economies to explore ways that could help accelerate APEC's regional goal to reduce energy intensity by at least 45 per cent by 2035. At present, the energy intensity in Hong Kong has decreased by over 30 per cent.
Over 100 experts and delegates from 15 APEC member economies attended the workshop to exchange views on energy intensity reduction and the development of renewable energy, covering aspects such as policy frameworks, regulations, practical experiences and technological developments.
The Assistant Director (Electricity and Energy Efficiency) of the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department and deputy lead shepherd of APEC's Energy Working Group, Mr Barry Chu, delivered the closing remarks today. He emphasised that Hong Kong will continue to enhance the synergistic effects in the promotion of energy saving measures, adoption of renewable energy and the application of innovative and intelligent technologies. He invited all APEC member economies to work together in promoting energy efficiency and the development of renewable energy to reduce the total energy intensity in the APEC region.
