Education Bureau holds Second Territory-wide Primary Schools Quiz Competition on Chinese History and Culture
**********************************************************************************
The Education Bureau (EDB) issued a circular memorandum today (February 17) to invite primary schools to join the Take a Spark, Pass it on: The Second Territory-wide Primary Schools Quiz Competition on Chinese History and Culture in a bid to deepen students' understanding of Chinese history and culture, and to cultivate an active learning atmosphere.

A spokesman for the EDB said, "The EDB has attached great importance to students' learning of Chinese history and culture and is committed to organising diversified activities to enhance students' learning interest. The Territory-wide Primary Schools Quiz Competition on Chinese History and Culture was first held last year and received tremendous support as well as positive feedback from schools. Following the success of the debut, we will continue to organise the second session this year. Schools are expected to encourage students to actively participate in the competition so as to enable them to learn among peers and enhance their knowledge."

The spokesman said, in addition to the quiz competition, the EDB continues to strengthen the promotion of Chinese culture this year. Building on the experience gained last year, the campaign on Chinese Classic Sayings 2021/22 has been launched (website: www.edb.gov.hk/chinese-culture) (Chinese only), and relevant resources are provided for teachers. Booklets of Recommended Texts of Chinese Literary Classics will be distributed to all primary and secondary schools at a later stage. The booklets encompass not only literary texts, but also annotations, reading guides and illustrations to enhance students' interests in reading. Students can make reference to these booklets for studying Chinese classical texts, recitation and writing.

Applications for the Take a Spark, Pass it on: The Second Territory-wide Primary Schools Quiz Competition on Chinese History and Culture are open for enrolment until March 11. The competition comprises preliminary, semi-final and final stages, with Primary Four to Six students as target participants. The preliminary stage will be held online in May, and each primary school may nominate a minimum of 20 students to enrol. The semi-final and final stages will be held and recorded at a television station between July and August. They will be broadcast afterwards.

The quiz competition is co-organised by the Academy of Chinese Studies. The EDB is pleased to have renowned experts serving as academic consultants and school councils and principal associations as supporting organisations.

In addition to the champion, the first runner-up and the second runner-up, the award categories specially include the 18 Districts Outstanding Achievement Award and the Schools with Greatest Participation Award to encourage more schools to take part in the event. The winners will be presented with trophies, certificates, book coupons, and more. To help students learn more about Chinese history and culture, a series of reference materials, which suit the reading level of primary students, will be uploaded to the competition website. Schools can visit the EDB Educational Multimedia for reference (emm.edcity.hk/playlist/1_urodbmui) (Chinese only).

The EDB will take forward the publicity campaigns to foster a conducive atmosphere for learning Chinese history and culture in society. The EDB has developed an online self-learning platform to promote Chinese classic sayings, which encourages students to learn through play. A new series of short videos has been introduced to enable students to enrich their understanding of the sayings and further put them into practice in their daily lives. A new batch of instant messaging stickers and stationery has also been produced to add a touch of classical culture to students' lives.
