EMSD announces results of special lift inspections
**************************************************
The special inspection covered 384 lifts of the same brand currently installed in Hong Kong and the EMSD has also carried out sampling checks. Except for the lift involved in the incident at Waterside Plaza and ten others currently undergoing modernisation works which have yet to conduct special inspection, that for the remaining 373 lifts have been completed in which the associated equipment of the lifts (traction system, suspension ropes and braking system) have been confirmed to be in safe working order.
Among the 373 lifts that have completed the special inspection, wear and tear of the grooves of the traction sheaves or in the suspension ropes of a relatively serious level were found in three lifts but their normal and safe operation were not affected. As a prudent measure, suspension ropes of two of the three lifts have been replaced and the lifts resumed normal operation after thorough examination. For the one remaining lift, worn grooves of its traction sheaves were found and the responsible person for the lift concerned is arranging the lift to carry out modernisation works. Operation of the lift has thus been suspended until the completion of the modernisation works and after conducting a thorough examination.
Also, the EMSD continued the in-depth investigation on the lift incident at Waterside Plaza which is expected to complete in two to three months. The EMSD will strictly enforce the law if contravention to the Lifts and Escalators Ordinance has been identified.
