Final report on serious incident of Hanergy Jet Company Limited G550 aircraft published
***************************************************************************************
The serious incident occurred when the aircraft was about 7 nautical miles from Runway 07L of the Hong Kong International Airport. It began to lose altitude quickly from around 2,000 feet to about 500 feet at its lowest. The Ground Proximity Warning System warning on board the aircraft was triggered in the process. The aircraft then carried out a missed approach and landed uneventfully. There was no injury to any person or damage to the aircraft or ground equipment. The occurrence was classified as a serious incident according to the criteria of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
"The investigation was conducted by the Accident Investigation Division of the CAD with the objective of identifying the circumstances and causes of the incident with a view to preventing recurrence," a CAD spokesman said.
The investigation was conducted by a team of professional investigators in strict adherence to international standards established by the ICAO. The investigation identified that it was probable that the pilot's inadvertent input applied to the elevator trim led to disengagement of the autopilot and a nose-down pitch moment that resulted in an excessive rate of descent. The investigation team made two safety recommendations, mainly suggesting enhanced training for the flight crew's overall flight deck management.
Throughout the investigation, all parties concerned were properly consulted on the report. The report is available for download at the CAD webpage (www.cad.gov.hk/english/reports.html).
