Territory-wide safe cycling enforcement operation starts
********************************************************

Police will conduct a nine-day territory-wide enforcement operation on safe cycling from tomorrow (April 9) to raise public awareness on cycling safety.

To promote safe cycling messages to cyclists and the public, Police officers distributed publicity leaflets at various locations throughout the territory prior to the operation. During the operation, Police will take stringent actions against cycling offences to enhance safe cycling.

From January to February 2017, there were 310 traffic accidents involving bicycles, causing 321 casualties. When compared with 279 traffic accidents and 290 casualties in the same period of last year, the figures both increased by about 11 per cent. Two fatal accidents are caused by cycling on carriageway, causing the death of one cyclist and one motorcyclist.

Common cycling offences include riding on the pavement, failing to comply with traffic lights, signs or road markings, riding without the necessary lights at night or times of poor visibility, carrying another person or any animal or article which obstructs the cyclist's view.

Police reminded members of the public that traffic accidents can be fatal and urged cyclists to obey road traffic regulations and pay attention to road safety.
