Mabel Cheung and Alex Law in New York on film based on true story (with photos)

Based on the story of the parents of Jackie Chan, the film features Sean Lau and Tang Wei in the leading roles set against the war-torn years from the 1930s to the 1940s, the three cities mentioned in the story are Hong Kong, Shanghai and Wuhu. Screenwriter Alex Law said that one of the themes of the film is the pursuit of love at times of turbulence, adversity and vagrantness, which echoes with the recent refugee crisis in Europe.
The cinema power couple is frequent major film awardees, dating back to the 1980s. Mabel Cheung won Best Director award for “Illegal Immigrant” (1985) in the 1986 Hong Kong Film Awards. Her “Painted Faces” (1988) and “City of Glass” (1998) won the Best Original Screenplay in the Golden Horse Award in 1988 and in 1998 respectively.
Alex Law's award list is equally impressive. It includes Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for “Painted Faces” (1988) in the 1988 Golden Horse Award; Best Screenplay for “An Autumn’s Tale” (1987) in the 1988 Hong Kong Film Awards; Best Original Screenplay for “City of Glass” (1998) in the 1998 Golden Horse Award; the Best Screenplay for “Echoes of the Rainbow” (2010) in the 2010 Hong Kong Film Awards.
At the meet-the-audience session after the screening, Mabel Cheung and Alex Law shared some behind-the-scene anecdotes about the film. The story was adapted from a feature documentary , “Traces of a Dragon: Jackie Chan and his Lost Family”, also filmed by Mabel Cheung and Alex Law on the extraordinary lives of Chan’s parents.
