Applications for Common Recruitment Examination to be invited tomorrow
******************************************************

From tomorrow (October 18), prospective applicants for civil service jobs at degree or professional level can apply to sit for the Common Recruitment Examination scheduled for December 16, 2006 (Saturday).

A spokesman for the Civil Service Bureau said valid Common Recruitment Examination results were required of applicants for civil service posts at degree or professional level. "People who are interested in applying for civil service posts at degree or professional level in the near future may wish to consider sitting for the coming examination, so as to be eligible to apply for civil service openings at degree or professional level that might be available before another Common Recruitment Examination is held."

The examination consists of three one-hour papers, namely Use of English (UE), Use of Chinese (UC) and Aptitude Test, in multiple-choice format. To cater for the different language requirements among posts at degree and professional level, starting from the coming examination, while candidates' results in the Aptitude Test will continue to be classified as pass or fail, the results of the two language papers will be classified as 'Level 2', 'Level 1' or 'Fail'.

In addition, Grade 'C' or above and Grade 'D' in Use of English of the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE), or equivalent, will be accepted as equivalent to 'Level 2' and 'Level 1' results respectively in the UE paper of the examination. Similarly, Grade 'C' or above and Grade 'D' in Chinese Language and Culture or Chinese Language and Literature of the HKALE will be accepted as equivalent to 'Level 2' and 'Level 1' results respectively in the UC paper of the examination. Applicants with the above results may wish to take this into account in deciding whether they need to take the UE and/or UC paper(s).

As a general requirement in language proficiency, applicants for civil service posts at degree or professional level are required to obtain 'Level 2' or 'Level 1' results in the two language papers in the examination as prescribed in the entry requirements set for civil service posts at degree and professional level in different civil service grades. Applicants for some of these posts are also required to pass the Aptitude Test. The examination is held independent of the recruitment process for any civil service post. Persons who wish to apply for civil service vacancies should apply to the recruiting grades/departments direct.

Holders of degree or professional qualifications, or university students who will have attained a degree in 2007 may apply to sit for the coming examination. In addition to the examination to be held in Hong Kong on December 16, 2006, the examination will also be held in several overseas cities on February 3, 2007, to facilitate the taking of the examination by those studying or residing overseas.

Persons interested in taking the coming Common Recruitment Examination may apply through the on-line facilities at the Civil Service Bureau homepage at www.csb.gov.hk or using the examination application form (CSB31 (9/2006)) which can be downloaded from the bureau homepage or obtained from any of the Public Enquiry Service Centres of District Offices or Job Centres of Labour Department from October 18 onwards. Applications must be made before 5pm on October 27, 2006 (Hong Kong time).
