HYAB launches new round of Thematic Youth Internship Programmes to Mainland
***************************************************************************
     The Home and Youth Affairs Bureau (HYAB) today (April 14) announced that a new round of the Thematic Youth Internship Programmes to the Mainland (Thematic Programmes) is now open for applications to provide young people with thematic internship opportunities in cultural, nature conservation and scientific research institutions in the Mainland.

      In his 2022 Policy Address, the Chief Executive stated that the Government would work with all sectors of the community on promoting a variety of activities to help young people broaden their horizons and acquire a better understanding of the development of the country and the world.  In the Youth Development Blueprint released by HYAB in December last year, it was also mentioned that the Bureau would further enhance the breadth and depth of internship and exchange programmes in the Mainland and overseas.  Under the Thematic Programmes, HYAB collaborates with relevant Mainland institutions to launch five internship programmes, including:

(1) Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Youth Internship Programme at  Palace Museum, co-organised with the Palace Museum in Beijing;
(2) Youth Internship Programme at Wolong National Nature Reserve, Sichuan, co-organised with the Wolong National Nature Reserve in Sichuan;
(3) Youth Internship Programme at Chinese Academy of Sciences, co-organised with the Chinese Academy of Sciences;
(4) Youth Internship Programme at Dunhuang, co-organised with the Dunhuang Academy; and
(5) Youth Internship Programme at Shandong on Marine Sciences, co-organised with the Qingdao National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology.

     The internship programmes will commence from June to August this year and last for four to six weeks, providing Hong Kong's youth with more than 80 thematic internship positions covering areas such as cultural heritage preservation, scientific research and technology, ecological and environmental conservation.  Each programme offers tailor-made internship arrangements and unique experiences for participants to acquire a good understanding of the work of the institutions and to play a part in them.  Under the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Youth Internship Programme at Palace Museum, Hong Kong’s participants will also work together with young people from Guangdong and Macao at the Palace Museum in Beijing to facilitate youth exchanges among the three places.

     The Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, Miss Alice Mak, said, “With the resumption of normal travel between Hong Kong and the Mainland, I look forward to resuming the Thematic Programmes this summer to provide Hong Kong’s youth with diversified, unique and in-depth thematic internship opportunities again.  In particular, I would like to thank relevant partners in the Mainland for their support in offering valuable internship opportunities at our country’s top-notch cultural and scientific research institutions, as well as arranging mentors with professional knowledge to guide the participants throughout the internship.  The Thematic Programmes will help our young people gain a deeper understanding of our country's development in various aspects and enhance their aspiration and passion in pursuing a career in relevant areas.

      “The HYAB will continue to work closely with different Mainland authorities to organise more thematic internship programmes to help young people broaden their horizons, cultivate work skills, enhance their competitiveness, accumulate work experience in the Mainland and prepare them for future career development.”

     Applicants should be local full-time post-secondary students (including sub-degree, undergraduate and post-graduate students) and Hong Kong permanent residents.  Apart from internship, the co-organisers will also provide training, field trips and other cultural exchange activities for participants, thereby deepening their understanding of the local culture and industry development.
