Proposals invited for Station by the Sea at Oku-Noto Triennale 2023 - Residence and Exhibition Programme
******************************************************************************************
Oku-Noto is located at the tip of the Noto Peninsula on the northern coast of Japan. Being adjacent to the ocean and mountains, Oku-Noto preserves satoyama (rural areas) and satoumi (sea areas), a part of the United Nation's GIAHS (Globally Important Agricultural Systems) and unique culture. Oku-Noto was once a fortress of marine transportation and a pioneer of trade and cultural exchange in Japan, and the Suzu Railway, connecting the central coast of the Noto Peninsula to the northern coast, was more than 100 kilometres long. Nevertheless, owing to urbanisation and population migration, the rich natural and cultural heritage of this place has gradually been forgotten. In view of the situation, the Oku-Noto Triennale is creating an "art festival at the furthest edge of the world", using contemporary art to raise people's awareness of the traditional culture, landscape and scenery in the peninsula.
This programme, organised by the APO, is looking for site-specific proposals that resonate with the potential and rich culture of Suzu. Artwork and any public programme to be presented should highlight the uniqueness of Suzu's distinctive nature, history and culture. The genre of content is not limited to visual art, as proposals that encompass various fields such as design, handicraft, cooking, technology, etc are also welcomed.
Participants must submit a proposal between today (February 8) and 8pm on March 24. All proposals must be delivered to the Exchange and Extension Team of the APO (Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, 7A Kennedy Road, Central, Hong Kong) by post or by hand. The APO will announce the result in May or June on its website.
The Oku-Noto Triennale will be held from September 2 to October 22 in Suzu, Japan. The APO will collaborate with the Oku-Noto Triennale Executive Committee to feature the residence, exhibition and programmes of the selected Hong Kong artist or art team during that period.
