Film Archive's "More Brilliance, Still Different - The D & B Story Redux" to screen numerous HK classic movies (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
Following the "A Different Brilliance - The D & B Story" publication and exhibition in 2020, the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will select 30 films produced by D & B Films Company (D & B) for screening from July 30 to December 18 at the HKFA Cinema, allowing audiences to revisit productions of Hong Kong cinema's golden age in the 1980s to the 1990s.

Founded by Mr Dickson Poon, Mr Sammo Hung and Mr John Sham in 1984, D & B established its own theatre circuit the following year, soon joining ranks with Golden Harvest and Cinema City to become one of the local film industry's "Big Three" at that time. In a mere eight years, D & B produced a number of cherished classics. It not only offered mass-market action films and comedies such as "The Return of Pom Pom" (1984), "Yes, Madam!" (1985) and "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World" (1987), but also works by unproven directors and films on subject matter considered less than marketable, such as "The Lunatics" (1986), "Dream Lovers" (1986), "Final Victory" (1987) and "An Autumn's Tale" (1987). A wide variety of topics were examined, complemented by diverse creative approaches, while appealing to the sensibilities of a newly emerged middle class of the time. D & B's productions were highly acclaimed at the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards.

"More Brilliance, Still Different - The D & B Story Redux" will screen 30 unmissable D & B films of various genres, among them are the 4K restored version of "An Autumn's Tale" and 10 movies in vintage 35mm film versions. The details of the screening schedule is at the Annex.

Tickets are priced at $45 and are available from July 2 at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk). For credit card telephone bookings, please call 2111 5999. For programme enquiries and concessionary schemes, please call 2739 2139 or visit www.filmarchive.gov.hk/en_US/web/hkfa/pe-event-2022-dnb.html.

To give audiences a more comprehensive view of D & B's production and Hong Kong cinema's golden age in the 1980s to 1990s, a "More Brilliance, Still Different - The D & B Story Redux" exhibition will be held in the HKFA from July 29 to February 12 next year. The exhibition will focus on the people of D & B, featuring oral history interviews with the actors and the backstage crew, complemented by precious artefacts and seldom-seen materials such as stills, scripts, props and award trophies. This will give audiences a recollection of one of the legendary companies in Hong Kong's film history. Details will be announced in due course.
