Film Archive's "Morning Matinee" series to feature Queen of Huadan Fong Yim-fun's classics (with photos)

     The Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will feature Fong Yim-fan as part of the "Morning Matinee" series from July to December. Eighteen of her movies will be screened at 11am on every Friday, enabling film lovers to revisit the superb acting skills of the Queen of Huadan (female lead). 

     To complement the thematic screenings, a free exhibition, "The Queen of Huadan - Celebrating the Stage and Screen Career of Fong Yim-fun", will be held from July 29 to December 30 at the 1/F Foyer of the HKFA. It will feature Fong's costumes and styling from her movies, allowing audiences to explore the aesthetic and taste behind her kaleidoscopic images.
      
     Born in 1928, Fong started to learn Cantonese opera at the age of 10, and became principal huadan by 16. Her signature aesthetic zihou (falsetto voice) was known as "Fong style". Fong entered the film world later, and debuted with "The Flower Drops by the Red Chamber" (1950). Before retiring after her marriage in 1959, she had performed in nearly 150 films in 10 years. The huge number of works that she participated in was a testament to one of the golden eras of Hong Kong movies. Fong's versatile onscreen personas made her popular in all types of movies, regardless of city clothing or period costume, comedies or melodramas. As Cantonese sing-song films flourished after the war, a number of songs sung by Fong became popular hits. After her retirement, Fong reappeared on stage in the 1980s, but only for charity purposes, and performed in a few Cantonese operas for fundraising.
            
     Highlights of the screenings include "All of the Love Heaven Allows" (1952), "She Said 'No' to Marriage but Now She Says 'Yes'" (1952), "The Fairy Shepherdess" (1958) and "A Red Spot" (1958), which were presented at the HKFA for the first time. Among the four movies, "All of the Love Heaven Allows" (1952) and "She Said 'No' to Marriage but Now She Says 'Yes'" (1952) were long-lost gems and can only be presented to audiences again after the HKFA's digitisation project. Moreover, "Mysterious Murder (Part One)" (1951), "Mysterious Murder (Part Two)" (1951) and "The Sorrowful Lute" (1957) are chosen by the HKFA as among the "100 Must-See Hong Kong Movies".      In order to comply with the requirements stipulated in the Prevention and Control of Disease (Requirements and Directions) (Business and Premises) Regulation (Cap. 599F) and relevant requirements of administrative instructions, visitors are required to scan the "LeaveHomeSafe" QR code before being allowed to enter the venues managed by the LCSD for necessary contact tracing if a confirmed case is found. In accordance with the Prevention and Control of Disease (Vaccine Pass) Regulation (Cap. 599L) and relevant requirements of administrative instructions, all persons entering indoor venues under the management of the LCSD must comply with the requirement of the Vaccine Pass.
