LegCo Panel on Education begins duty visit in Finland (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The delegation of the Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Education began its visit in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, yesterday (September 9, Helsinki time) to gain a better understanding on its education system.

     The delegation started the day by visiting the Pihkapuisto Comprehensive School, which provides free and compulsory basic education for students aged 7 to 13. Members were given an introduction on the school by the Vice-principal, Mr Mikko Oikarinen. They were particularly interested in the school's support to students including those with special educational needs. Members then interacted with teachers and students through guided tour, class visit and school lunch.

     In the afternoon, the delegation visited the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI) and received briefings by the Counsellors of Education, Ms Erja Vitikka and Ms Marjo Rissanen, on the education system in Finland and the work of EDUFI.

     The delegation then visited the Ministry of Education and Culture and exchanged views with the State Secretary of Education, Ms Minna Kelhä, on formulation and implementation of education policies in Finland.

     The delegation will continue its duty visit in Helsinki today (September 10, Helsinki time). Delegation members will visit the Day Care Centre Franzénia, the Helsinki Central Library Oodi and the Me & MyCity.
