EPD makes four successful prosecutions against illegal waste disposal

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) successfully traced four fly-tipping cases through the surveillance camera systems installed at fly-tipping black spots and photos provided by members of the public. One of cases involved a logistics company and its employee who deposited packaging waste at the roadside of Kwai Tai Road in Kwai Chung. A further three cases involved illegal dumping of waste including wooden frames, mud, broken concrete and rubble by vehicle drivers at Kwai Tai Road in Kwai Chung, Siu Lang Shui Road in Tuen Mun and a piece of private land near Yick Yuen Road in Tuen Mun. The EPD subsequently prosecuted all persons involved under the WDO after evidence gathering.
The EPD spokesperson reminded construction workers and members of the transportation and logistics sector that construction and demolition waste as well as commercial and industrial waste should be delivered to the Government's waste treatment facilities for proper disposal in accordance with legal requirements. Permission from land owners should be obtained if the construction waste is to be deposited on a private lot. Indiscriminate disposal of waste is an offence and an unethical act. Under the WDO, first-time offenders are liable to a maximum fine of $200,000 and six months' imprisonment.
