"Among the refuse cleared, some 96 tonnes were collected at the Victoria Park LNY Fair, around 3 tonnes less than the quantity last year," an FEHD spokesman said.
The spokesman noted that this year, apart from collecting recyclables including waste paper, plastic materials and metal in each LNY Fair site, the FEHD also collaborated with the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) to arrange for contractors to collect bamboo and wooden pallets at 13 LNY Fairs sites and unsold peach blossom from Victoria Park LNY Fair site and Fa Hui Park LNY Fair site. About 49 tonnes of bamboo, 20 tonnes of wooden pallets and 7.9 tonnes of peach blossom were collected. Some of the bamboo collected will be processed by non-government organisations afterwards.
The department deployed 271 staff members, 40 refuse collection vehicles and street cleaning vehicles to clean up the Victoria Park venue. The other 14 LNY Fair sites were cleaned by the department's cleaning contractors.
The department also gathered some 1 167 unsold pots of flowers and plants donated by the vendors in the fairs. They were delivered to 192 elderly homes/residential care homes for persons with disabilities and eight public hospitals today by 22 volunteer teams made up of FEHD staff, the spokesman added.
All refuse collection work was completed at about 5.30pm. After thorough cleansing, the venues were restored to their original state.
