Pentahotel Tuen Mun convicted for illegal installation of cooking stoves

     Pentahotel Hong Kong, located at Tsun Wen Road in Tuen Mun, failed to submit an application to the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) to install cooking stoves before carrying out such works. The company concerned, Luks Industrial Company Limited, was convicted and fined $10,000 by Fanling Magistrates' Courts today (January 30) for contravening the Air Pollution Control (Furnaces, Ovens and Chimneys) (Installation and Alteration) Regulations.

     An EPD spokesman said that during an inspection of the hotel last June, EPD officers found that no approval had been obtained from the EPD prior to the installation of cooking stoves in its restaurant kitchen located on the first floor of the hotel. After the collection of evidence, the EPD subsequently initiated prosecution against the company in accordance with the regulations.

     The spokesman reminded members of the food business that if they intend to install or alter furnaces, ovens, chimneys or flues with total fuel consumption capacity exceeding the exemption limit, they have to submit an application to the EPD for the installation and alteration works in accordance with the regulations requirements, and such works can only be carried out after obtaining approval from the EPD. In addition, the exhaust system and other air pollution control systems of fuel-burning equipment should be properly designed to avoid causing air pollution or nuisance to nearby residents.

     According to the regulations, offenders are liable to a maximum fine of $50,000 and a daily fine of $500 may be imposed for a continuing offence.
