SED meets with Minister of State at Department for Education of UK (with photos)

     ​The Secretary for Education, Mr Kevin Yeung, yesterday (January 24, London time) continued his duty visit to the United Kingdom (UK).

     In the morning, Mr Yeung paid a courtesy call on the Minister of State at the Department for Education of the UK, Mr Nick Gibb, to exchange views on issues of mutual concern, including school pedagogical and assessment practices and support for students, and the professional development of teachers.

     The UK is one of Hong Kong's closest partners in education. Currently, the publicly funded universities in Hong Kong have 207 student exchange agreements and 322 research collaboration projects with institutions in the UK.
 
     Under the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme, launched in 2014 to support outstanding local students to pursue studies in world-renowned universities outside Hong Kong, 190 out of the 270 awardees in the first three cohorts have chosen the UK as the destination to pursue their undergraduate or postgraduate studies.

     The development strategies of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area as well as Hong Kong's role as a "super-connector" and its unique advantage of "one country, two systems" could offer new opportunities to talents in the region and from around the world.

     Mr Yeung said he looked forward to closer ties in education between Hong Kong and the UK, such as having more UK students and quality education services coming to Hong Kong or the nearby regions.

     Afterwards, Mr Yeung visited the British Educational Training and Technology Show to give support to Hong Kong teachers and students who were demonstrating their exhibits in relation to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and coding education in the expo. They came from four Hong Kong schools, namely Chinese YMCA College, Fukien Secondary School Affiliated School, Ma On Shan Ling Liang Primary School and PLK Dr Jimmy Wong Chi-Ho (Tin Sum Valley) Primary School.

     He also met with a group of Hong Kong teachers who were on a study tour to the UK organised by the Education Bureau and the Association of Information Technology Leaders in Education, and listened to their feedback on e-learning, STEM and coding education.

     Following the completion of his duty visit to the UK, Mr Yeung will return to Hong Kong this afternoon (January 25).
