Key statistics on business performance and operating characteristics of transportation, storage and courier services sector in 2016

Operating expenses and compensation of employees of this sector altogether amounted to $415.4 billion in 2016, representing a decrease of 2.5% compared with 2015; on a per establishment basis, they increased slightly by 0.6% compared with 2015 to $17.1 million in 2016.
Gross surplus of the sector, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses and compensation of employees, decreased by 11.5% compared with 2015 to $67.1 billion in 2016; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus decreased from $3.0 million in 2015 to $2.8 million in 2016. Gross surplus accounted for 13.9% of total receipts of this sector in 2016, down by 1.2 percentage points compared with 2015.
Value added of the sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, decreased by 2.5% compared with 2015 to $145.7 billion in 2016; on a per establishment basis, value added was $6.0 million in 2016, which was generally comparable to 2015.
According to the survey results, it was estimated that the sector comprised some 24 300 establishments and engaged about 223 600 persons, or an average of 9.2 persons per establishment, in 2016.
Within the transportation, storage and courier services sector, the five largest industry groupings in terms of value added in 2016 were (1) air transport and service activities incidental to air transportation, (2) land passenger transport, (3) other transportation support activities, (4) land freight transport, and (5) service activities incidental to water transportation. They together accounted for 85.2% of the value added of the sector.
In the air transport and service activities incidental to air transportation industry, total receipts amounted to $147.1 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $113.8 billion in 2016. Gross surplus decreased from $38.7 billion in 2015 to $33.3 billion in 2016, accounting for 22.7% of total receipts in 2016. Value added decreased by 4.5% compared with 2015 to $63.2 billion.
In the land passenger transport industry, total receipts amounted to $52.9 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $36.8 billion in 2016. Gross surplus decreased slightly from $16.3 billion in 2015 to $16.2 billion in 2016, accounting for 30.5% of total receipts in 2016. Value added increased by 3.8% compared with 2015 to $31.1 billion.
In the other transportation support activities industry which comprised mainly cargo forwarders and shipbrokers, total receipts amounted to $108.1 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $104.2 billion in 2016. Gross surplus decreased from $5.0 billion in 2015 to $3.9 billion in 2016, accounting for 3.6% of total receipts in 2016. Value added decreased by 8.1% compared with 2015 to $12.5 billion.
In the land freight transport industry, total receipts amounted to $20.1 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $17.8 billion in 2016. Gross surplus decreased from $2.6 billion in 2015 to $2.4 billion in 2016, accounting for 11.7% of total receipts in 2016. Value added increased by 4.6% compared with 2015 to $9.1 billion.
In the service activities incidental to water transportation industry, total receipts amounted to $15.0 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $10.1 billion in 2016. Gross surplus decreased from $4.9 billion in 2015 to $4.8 billion in 2016, accounting for 32.3% of total receipts in 2016. Value added decreased slightly by 0.8% compared with 2015 to $8.1 billion.
