Through exhibiting a diverse range of Hong Kong comic books, original drawings, videos and products, the exhibition charted the history of the development of Hong Kong comics over the past 60 years. Two well-known Hong Kong comic artists, Ms Alice Mak, the illustrator and artist of the famous McDull series of comics and animations, and Ms Miloza Ma, one of the new generation of artists specialising in comics, illustration and character design, as well as Hong Kong publisher and founder of Today Publications, Mr Karson Mak, also participated in the festival, and hosting workshops, live drawing demonstrations and autograph sessions that accompanied the exhibition.
Speaking at the opening reception of the exhibition on September 1, the Director-General of the London ETO, Ms Priscilla To, said: "Over the past 20 years, under the successful implementation of 'one country two systems' principle, Hong Kong has continued to thrive as an international business and financial centre underpinned by the rule of law, a clean and efficient government, a level playing field for business, and a well-educated population.
"Yet Hong Kong is not only about business. We have over the years developed into a leading art and culture hub in the region, showing the unique creativity and vitality of the Hong Kong people. We hope that we could introduce to you a different side of Hong Kong through this exhibition. It is thus our great honour to present our comics artists here in Helsinki and to share with friends in Finland their talent, passion and dedication."
Throughout this year, the London ETO has been celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR through a programme of events covering music, design, fashion, film, visual arts, cultural heritage, public celebrations, dinners, and business seminars and receptions, in the United Kingdom and other countries under its purview.
