**********************************************
Accompanied by the Wong Tai Sin District Officer, Ms Annie Kong, Mr Wong started his visit at Wong Tai Sin District Council and listened to its members' views on the Government's environmental protection work to understand their concerns on district environmental issues. Mr Wong said that publicity and public education are of paramount importance for the effective promotion of environmental protection. He thanked the District Council for its active promotion of green publicity activities and programmes to disseminate messages on waste reduction and clean recycling, enabling the concept of green living to take root in the community.
Mr Wong said the Environment Bureau plans to implement municipal solid waste charging and the public should be well prepared for the introduction of charging as soon as possible. The Government will continue to co-operate with the District Councils to enhance public understanding of the charging scheme through various community education and publicity programmes. The public are encouraged to reduce waste at source and not to be a "Big Waster" in preparation for the implementation of the charging.
Accompanied by the Wong Tai Sin District Council chairman, Mr Li Tak-hong, Mr Wong then visited the Wong Tai Sin Community Recycling Centre. Operated by a non-profit-making organisation, the Centre is funded by the Environment and Conservation Fund and is one of the collection points of the Community Recycling Network.
More than 70 housing estates in Wong Tai Sin have participated in the Programme on Source Separation of Domestic Waste (SSDW), covering over 90 per cent of the district’s population. Established by the Government and non-government organisations, the Community Recycling Network can serve residents of buildings not covered by the SSDW and collect their recyclable waste. Apart from assisting in the recycling of materials of low commercial value, including waste plastics, waste glass bottles and small waste electrical and electronic equipment, Wong Tai Sin Community Recycling Centre also proactively promotes environmental protection education to encourage residents to participate in waste reduction and source separation of recyclable wastes to cultivate green living habits.
Before concluding his visit, Mr Wong paid a visit to the Salvation Army Chuk Yuen Integrated Service Centre to exchange views with the youngsters and the elderly participating in activities organised by the centre, as well as to learn more about their daily lives and their views on environmental protection. Mr Wong took the opportunity to encourage them to practise "use less, waste less" and low-carbon living, and to build a green Hong Kong together.
