To commemorate the 20th anniversary and share the joy with ethnic minority communities in Hong Kong, support service centres for ethnic minorities and community support teams sponsored by the HAD will hold a series of celebration activities, including multicultural shows, carnivals and competitions, in the coming months.
Officiating at the ceremony, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, said that Hong Kong is a world city welcoming people from around the globe, and many have settled in Hong Kong and call it home. The city's residents are one family and have more commonalities than differences, he said, and all contribute to Hong Kong together to make Hong Kong a better place to live in. He expressed the belief that the spirit of unity is crucial to the success of Hong Kong and said that is why "Together • Progress • Opportunity" is the theme for the 20th anniversary.
A video showcasing the upcoming celebration activities was featured at the launch ceremony. There were also stage performances by talented and energetic ethnic minority youths from the support service centres, the community support teams and Yaumati Kaifong Association School. Guests and participants of different ethnicities also visited an exhibition and game booths themed around racial harmony.
Ethnic minorities are encouraged to visit the support service centres and enrol in the celebration activities. Details are available on the HAD Race Relations Unit website.
Also officiating at today's ceremony were the Director of Home Affairs, Miss Janice Tse, and representatives from the organisers of celebration activities, including Christian Action, Hong Kong Christian Service, the Hong Kong Community Network, the Hong Kong Nepalese Federation, the International Social Service Hong Kong Branch, the New Home Association, the Pakistan Islamic Welfare Union, the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council and Yuen Long Town Hall.
