Basic Law Quiz Competition enhances public knowledge (with photos)

Jointly organised by the Home Affairs Bureau, the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education (CPCE) and the Working Group on Local Community under the Basic Law Promotion Steering Committee, and co-organised by the Department of Justice, the Basic Law Quiz Competition Final cum Prize Presentation Ceremony was held today (April 29).

     Speaking at the ceremony, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, said that the Basic Law is Hong Kong's constitutional document, and under the protection of the Basic Law, Hong Kong people retain their lifestyle. He added that as part of the country, Hong Kong's future development hinges on that of the country. He also noted that Hong Kong should seize the opportunities under the rapid development in the country.

     The Chairperson of the CPCE, Ms Melissa Pang, said that apart from its commitment to promoting civic education as well as to publicise the core civic values such as "respect and inclusiveness", "responsibility" and "love" outside schools, the committee will continue its efforts to promote the Basic Law to enable the public to learn more about it at the district level.

     The quiz competition was among the events organised to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The CPCE devised the questions based on all chapters of the Basic Law and its development and also adopted the quiz format, aiming to enhance the general public's knowledge of the Basic Law in a lively and interesting way.

     Divided into Primary School, Secondary School and Open categories, participants first answered questions about the Basic Law online, or completed question sheets published by the organisers and distributed to schools and community organisations. Those with the highest scores in each category were selected by ballot to attend the final. They were then selected from each category on the spot for question sessions to compete for the champion and first and second runner-up prizes. The quiz competition this year received an overwhelming response, attracting over 16 000 participants.

     To tie in with the quiz competition, roving exhibitions with interactive computer games were held from December last year to February this year to promote the Basic Law. Two seminars were also held in February this year to introduce to secondary school teachers and students the development and practice of the Basic Law.
