Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund 30th Awards Presentation Ceremony held today

The following is issued on behalf of the Working Family and Student Financial Assistance Agency:

     Around 800 students, three working adults and two apprentices were presented with scholarships and awards at the 30th Awards Presentation Ceremony of the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund (SEYMF) at Hong Kong City Hall today (March 19).

     Officiating at the ceremony were Lady Youde; the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mr Ma Ching-cheng; the Chairman of the SEYMF Council, Professor Richard Ho, and other members of the Board of Trustees and the Council.

     Speaking at the ceremony, Lady Youde remarked that the Fund has been working tirelessly in promoting education and research among people with different levels of academic attainment for the betterment of Hong Kong since its establishment in 1987. In the past 30 years, the Fund had disbursed over $247 million to fund various scholarships, awards and sponsorship schemes, benefiting more than 750 000 people. She said she was delighted to see that the Fund today was firmly established as one of the most prestigious scholarship funds in Hong Kong.

     Since its inception, the SEYMF has supported over 24 300 Hong Kong students under its major schemes. Over 2 600 scholars and fellows have completed their studies and are now working in Hong Kong in different sectors, contributing to the well-being and development of society.

     In the 2016/17 academic year, the Fund disbursed $3.98 million, presenting, among others, one fellowship for a postgraduate student; one scholarship for an undergraduate student; one scholarship for a disabled undergraduate student; two medals for students who obtained outstanding results in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination; two awards for outstanding apprentices; and three awards for working adults who underwent retraining and successfully applied what they learned in their new positions. Details are as follows:

     Mr Khiatani Paul Vinod of City University of Hong Kong was awarded the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship at $50,000.

     Miss Bibi Tayyaba of the Education University of Hong Kong was awarded the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship at $40,000.

     Mr Yang Chan-kuang of the Chinese University of Hong Kong was awarded the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship for Disabled Students at $40,000.

     Miss Bernice Cheung Cheuk-sin of Diocesan Girls' School and Miss Winnie Fong of Pui Ching Middle School, who both obtained outstanding results in the 2016 HKDSE Examination, were awarded Sir Edward Youde Memorial Medals.

     The two apprentices who received the Outstanding Apprentice Awards are (1) Miss Cheang Hei-na, who attained a Higher Diploma in Building Studies and is currently an assistant foreman, and (2) Mr Lam Yuk-shing, who attained a Craft Certificate in Electrical Engineering and is currently a power cable jointer. They were nominated by the Director of Apprenticeship.

     The three working adults who received the Awards for Self-Improvement for Working Adults are (1) Ms Chen Ruiqing, who completed an Enhanced Construction Manpower Training Scheme in Surveying and Setting-out full-time course and is currently a leveller II, (2) Mr Wilson Law Wai-shing, who completed a Certificate in Barista Training and is currently a coffee roaster and training instructor, and (3) Ms Tsang Hoi-yin, who completed a Foundation Certificate in Healthcare Massage and is currently a beautician and masseuse. They were nominated by the Employees Retraining Board and the Construction Industry Council.

     The Fund also awarded Sir Edward Youde Memorial Prizes for Senior Secondary School Students, amounting to $634,400 in total, to 781 senior secondary school students from schools throughout the territory and 12 students from the Vocational Training Council.

     In 2016/17, the Fund continued to provide an annual sponsorship of $400,000 towards the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival to increase the exposure of secondary school and tertiary students to the performing arts. This year, more than 6 000 students became members of the Young Friends and around 18 000 students participated in various programmes and activities under the scheme.
