SCS visits Transport Department (with photos)
*********************************************
Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Thomas Chow, Mr Cheung first visited the Hong Kong Licensing Office in Admiralty. He talked with front-line staff to gain a better understanding of the procedures for registering and licensing motor vehicles. He was also given a demonstration of how the staff issue, renew and cancel vehicle licenses and permits.
Mr Cheung then proceeded to the 24-hour Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre located at Immigration Tower in Wan Chai and listened to a presentation on its operation. During serious traffic or transport incidents, the Centre co-ordinates traffic and public transport arrangements and maintains close liaison with other government departments and public transport operators to collect the latest traffic and road situation information. The Centre also carries out appropriate co-ordination and responses, develops traffic and transport contingency plans and disseminates road traffic information to the public at suitable junctures. Mr Cheung also learned from staff that the Centre currently handles more than 5,000 traffic and transport-related incidents each year.
During his visit, Mr Cheung met the senior staff of the department. He also met with staff representatives of various grades at a tea gathering to exchange views on issues that concern them. He praised colleagues for their efforts, and encouraged them to continue to provide high quality and professional services to the public.
