Mr Lau visited the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) today (January 12) and celebrated the Lunar New Year with Professor Jao and friends of the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole. He was joined by the Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Mrs Betty Fung; the Under Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui; and the Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Culture), Dr Louis Ng.
Professor Jao expressed to Mr Lau his support for the construction of the Hong Kong Palace Museum in the West Kowloon Cultural District and said he believed it could promote the development of Chinese culture. In fact, Professor Jao has done a lot in the study of the Palace Museum and released academic work in this field.
"The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government thanks Professor Jao for his support for the Home Affairs Bureau and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) in organising exhibitions and academic activities on his work and sharing generously his achievements and experiences with the public over the years. Professor Jao, with many artistic talents, is a role model for the younger generation," Mr Lau said.
This year, the LCSD and HKU will jointly hold the exhibition "Splendour of Dunhuang: Jao Tsung-i's Selected Academic and Art Works Inspired by Dunhuang Culture", featuring Professor Jao's publications, letters, manuscripts, paintings and calligraphy which are related to Dunhuang arts and culture. Through the exhibits, visitors can view the great contributions of Professor Jao to the study of Dunhuang art and culture, as well as the unique position of Dunhuang in the history of cultural exchange between the East and the West. The exhibition will be staged at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum from May to September.
