CS visits UK (with photos)

     The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, began her visit in London, the United Kingdom (UK), today (September 25, London time). She visited the Tate Modern museum and met with Hong Kong students and residents there and provided them with updates on developments in Hong Kong.

     Shortly after her arrival in London, Mrs Lam joined a luncheon attended by some 100 members of the Hong Kong community including local business leaders, professionals and members of alumni associations of Hong Kong universities in the UK. Mrs Lam gave a briefing on the latest developments of Hong Kong and the multifaceted opportunities for UK business in Hong Kong, the Mainland of China and the Asian region at large. She encouraged the second generation of Hong Kong people in the UK to return to Hong Kong to seize the new opportunities through the Admission Scheme for the Second Generation of Chinese Hong Kong Permanent Residents.

     Mrs Lam then visited the Tate Modern museum, which has opened a new extension building called the Switch House. Designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, who also designed the M+ building in the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD), the Switch House is a 10-storey twisting, pyramid-shaped tower with large gallery spaces. It has increased Tate Modern's space for arts display by 60 per cent. The museum is one of the world’s largest museums of international modern and contemporary art. In her capacity as the Board Chairman of the WKCD Authority, Mrs Lam also explored opportunities for collaboration between Tate Modern and M+.

     In the evening, Mrs Lam met with more than 30 Hong Kong students studying in the UK, including scholars under the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme, to update them on the opportunities for the younger generation arising from the unique position of Hong Kong as the gateway to China and under the Belt and Road Initiative. She encouraged them to return to Hong Kong after graduation to contribute to the city’s long-term development.

     The Special Representative for Hong Kong Economic and Trade Affairs to the European Union, Ms Shirley Lam, and the Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, London, Ms Priscilla To, accompanied Mrs Lam during the day's programme.

     Mrs Lam will continue her visit in London tomorrow (September 26, London time).
