******************************************************************************************
The Hong Kong Museum of Art will tomorrow (September 10) launch the education programme and exhibition "Living with Bamboo: Museum of Art is Here", which will run until October 11. Through a series of bamboo-themed museum collections, the exhibition will not only enable members of the public to enjoy and appreciate bamboo artworks from ancient and contemporary periods, but also allow them to understand how bamboo connects with art and daily lives.

The "Living with Bamboo: Museum of Art is Here" education programme and exhibition is one of the highlight programmes of the Hong Kong Museum of Art to maintain its presence and bring art into the community during its closure period. The exhibition will be held at the Exhibition Gallery of the Hong Kong Central Library, featuring selected works from the museum collections and artworks by students of the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University. Highlight exhibits include a brush pot carved in high relief with the scene "Su Shi's Nocturnal Boat Excursion to the Red Cliff with His Friends"; a bamboo undergarment; a crab and ears of grain carved in the round from the Qing dynasty; the lithograph "A bamboo aqueduct", which uses a 19th century scene of Hong Kong as the theme; a wrist rest carved in liuqing low relief with Lady Lin Daiyu; Zheng Xie's ink painting "Orchid, bamboo and rock"; Li Yanshan's ink painting "Bamboo in red"; and the contemporary sculpture by Van Lau in metal "Bamboo in the wind".

In ancient China, bamboo was regarded philosophically as the symbol of a gentleman, which inspired lots of artists to paint bamboo in their artworks. Bamboo always was and still is loved by the people. It can be turned into delicious recipes and serves many practical uses such as in making containers and scaffolding. The exhibition and education programme aims to let members of the public have a better understanding of the important role bamboo has played in traditional Chinese art and culture, and to let the public learn about the rich and unique cultural meaning of bamboo.

Apart from the exhibition, the museum will hold a series of education activities to promote the culture of bamboo, including docent tours, outreach workshops, talks, interactive workshops, teachers' workshops and music performances.

Guests officiating at the launch ceremony of the event today (September 9) included the Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Culture), Dr Louis Ng; the Chairman of the Sub-committee on Visual Arts of the Advisory Committee on Arts Development, Mr Vincent Lo; the Director of the Design and Cultural Studies Workshop, Mr Chiu Kwong-chiu; the Director of the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University, Professor John Aiken; and the Museum Director of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Miss Eve Tam.
