SHA commences visit to Rio de Janeiro (with photos)

     The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, started his visit to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, today (August 4, Rio de Janeiro time).

     In the morning, he visited the venue for rowing competitions to learn about how the Hong Kong athletes have made their final preparations. In the afternoon, he attended a welcoming ceremony and a flag raising ceremony for the Hong Kong delegation at the Olympic Village. He had lunch with Hong Kong athletes, and encouraged them to strive with their best efforts in the competitions ahead.

     Mr Lau said that the quadrennial Olympic Games is a major event in the sports community, and Hong Kong athletes' participation in it is a remarkable achievement. He said he believed that the athletes would perform well in the Games.

     He will attend the Olympic Games opening events and ceremony tomorrow (August 5, Rio de Janeiro time).
