The Research Grants Council (RGC) will present the fourth public lecture of this year under the theme "Social Mobility and Youth Advancement in Hong Kong Society" on December 5 (Saturday) at the Hong Kong Central Library.
The RGC has invited Professor of the Department of Applied Social Sciences at the City University of Hong Kong, Professor Eric Chui, and Associate Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Education Policy and Leadership at the Hong Kong Institute of Education, Dr Celeste Yuen, to share their research findings and knowledge with the public. To understand young people's views on social mobility and advancement in Hong Kong, Professor Chui will give a lecture entitled "Identities of Youth in Hong Kong: Values, Well-being and Views", which attempts to conceptualise the identity formation, cherished values, sense of well-being, and views of a sample of tertiary-educated post-90s younger adult cohorts within a framework that elucidates their lives in Hong Kong's sea of changing landscapes and developments.
Research findings show that due to the long-standing examination-oriented school culture and neglect of personal spiritual health, Hong Kong's mainstream Chinese secondary students have relatively low levels of life satisfaction, a lack of sense of purpose in life and disconnected relationships when compared with their south Asian peers. Dr Yuen will deliver a talk entitled "Educational Experiences, Spiritual Health and Life Satisfaction of Hong Kong Secondary Students with Diverse Cultural Backgrounds" to discuss how educators, policy makers, parents, spiritual educators and students should collaborate to ensure their curriculum is responsive and relevant to the real needs of youths.
