The Research Grants Council (RGC) will present the second public lecture of this year under the theme "Climate Changes" on July 18 (Saturday) at Hong Kong Science Museum.
The RGC has invited Associate Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Dr Lam Ka-se, and Professor of the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Hong Kong, Professor Zong Yongqiang, to share their research findings and knowledge with the public. Climate change and air quality deterioration are two critical challenges that human beings are facing. Climate change includes changes in air temperature, intensity of extreme weather events, and the amount and pattern of precipitation. Air quality depends directly or indirectly on weather conditions. Dr Lam will give a talk entitled "Impact of Climate Change on Air Quality of Pearl River Delta Region" to analyse the current relationship between temperature rise and future surface ozone/aerosol in the Pearl River Delta Region.
Professor Zong will deliver a lecture entitled "Sea-level Change in the Past, Present and Future: Implications to Hong Kong". Based on a number of recent studies in the South China Sea region, the talk will provide an overview of climate change and sea-level fluctuations throughout some important geological periods, and explain the underlying causes of sea-level change and methods for sea-level studies. It will analyse with the audience why we must not allow global temperature to rise more than two degrees Celsius within the 21st century and why global warming will have a greater impact on human society than global cooling in the issue of sea-level change.
Since 2009, leading scholars in their respective fields have been invited by the RGC to deliver public lectures. These lectures aim at arousing public interest in local research development.
