Infectious diseases cases in Kowloon Central Cluster
****************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for Kowloon Central Cluster (KCC) made the following announcement today (February 10):

Three babies (two male and one female, aged from 3 weeks to 5 months) were identified as carriers of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Queen Elizabeth Hospital through routine surveillance screening on February 5 and 9. All of them are under isolation and are in a stable condition. The hospital has stepped up the infection control measures in the ward concerned and the Hospital Infection Control Team will continue to closely monitor the situation.

Regarding an earlier announcement by Kowloon Hospital on a cluster of patients in a female Rehabilitation Ward confirmed to have Influenza A (H3) infection, two more patients (aged 85 and 95) in the ward tested positive for Influenza A (H3) today. The patients concerned are being treated under isolation with stable condition.

Admission to the ward has been suspended and restricted visiting to the ward has been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
