Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme extended to cover flow controllers

     The Water Supplies Department (WSD) today (August 7) extended the Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme (WELS) to cover flow controllers and invited applications for registration.

     The Scheme covers both locally manufactured and imported flow controllers for water taps and showers for bathing. For registration, manufacturers, importers and related parties in the flow controller business just need to submit a test certificate issued by a recognised laboratory that proves their flow controllers meet the standard of the Scheme together with relevant documents to the WSD.

     To further promote water conservation, the WSD launched the voluntary WELS in September 2009. Apart from covering flow controllers, the Scheme covers showers for bathing, water taps, washing machines and urinal equipment.

     Products registered under the WELS are classified into four grades, with Grade 1 being the most water-efficient. Registered products have a water-efficiency label attached to state the level of water consumption and efficiency and to assist consumers in making choices.

     As at August 5, the numbers of registered products were as follows:
