Hospital Authority welcomes funding support for new children's hospital
****************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The Hospital Authority (HA) welcomes the funding support from the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council today (June 21) for the $13 billion project to establish a children's hospital in the Kai Tak Development Area.

The HA spokesman said the Government had earlier delegated the HA with the responsibilities of the planning, building and future management of this new hospital. "In preparation for this new hospital, the HA has already established a Planning and Commissioning Committee to oversee the paediatric service redistribution within the HA, and the planning as well as commissioning of the new hospital," the spokesman said.

"The new hospital aims to raise the professional standards and quality of clinical services to child patients suffering from complex and serious illnesses and to enhance the standards of research and training through cross-fertilisation of expertise in the specialty of paediatrics," the spokesman added.

Upon commissioning, the children's hospital will be the key player of the paediatric network in the HA by serving as principally a tertiary territory-wide referral centre for diagnosis and treatment of complex cases requiring multidisciplinary management or surgical intervention in addition to secondary care.

"At the same time, the other 13 public hospitals with paediatric departments will continue to provide acute paediatric services, secondary care services and community care in their respective communities," the spokesman remarked, adding that construction work for the children's hospital will commence later this year and is expected to complete by 2017 for service commissioning in 2018.
