The Government today (March 22) announced that the Chief Executive had re-appointed Mr Felix Fong Wo as the Chairman of the Advisory Council on Food and Environmental Hygiene for a term of two years with effect from April 1, 2013. Mr Fong is a lawyer and has been the Chairman of the Council since 2009.
At the same time, four new members were appointed and 11 serving members were re-appointed to the Council. All of the appointments are for a term of two years from April 1, 2013, to March 31, 2015.
The four new members are Mr Abraham Chan Yu-ling, Dr Chung Shan-shan, Ms Josephine Kea Chi-shun and Dr Kenneth Leung Mei-yee.
Mr Abraham Chan Yu-ling is Chairman and CEO of PuraPharm Group of Companies, a manufacturer of Chinese medicine and health products.
Dr Chung Shan-shan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology and the Programme Director for the Master of Science in Environmental and Public Health Management of the Hong Kong Baptist University.
Ms Josephine Kea Chi-shun is the Principal of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Chai Wan) and the Academic Director of the Vocational Training Council Business Administration Discipline.
Dr Kenneth Leung Mei-yee is an Associate Professor in the School of Biological Science and the Programme Director for Master of Science in Environmental Management of the University of Hong Kong.
Welcoming the new appointments, the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, said he believed the Council would be able to benefit from their wise counsel and expertise when tendering advice to the Government on food and environmental hygiene issues.
Dr Ko also expressed gratitude to the four outgoing members, Mr Ronald Lau Yiu-fai, Mrs Elizabeth Mok Lee Mi-yu, Professor Rudolf Wu Shiu-sun and Dr Yue Kwok-to, for their valuable contribution to the work of the Council. All of them had served on the Council for six years.
"In the past few years, the Council has provided valuable advice to the Government on a wide range of weighty issues including measures against avian influenza and human swine influenza, as well as legislative proposals on food safety, nutrition labelling and formula products intended for infants and young children. The Government will continue to look to the Council for advice on food and environmental hygiene issues", Dr Ko said.
The Council is a non-statutory body established on April 1, 2000, to advise the Government on food and environmental hygiene issues. The Council comprises a Chairman, 15 non-official members and four ex-officio members.
