Tse Chun-yan to share millennia-spanning history of the guqin
********************************************************

Guqin music performer and composer Tse Chun-yan will share knowledge in the Chinese Music Lecture Series on Guqin, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and to be conducted in Cantonese, in September.

The guqin has long been associated with the literati tradition of China. It has a history of more than 2,000 years and has continued to change with the social and cultural conditions as well as the development of Chinese music over time. This series of talks will discuss the various facets of Chinese music with reference to the guqin.

Each talk will see performers, composers or academics give demonstrations and participate in discussions.

Tse Chun-yan was born in Hong Kong and played the harmonica from age 6 until he picked up Chinese music in his 20s. He learned the zheng from Choi Ngar-si, and the guqin under Kwan Sing-yau, Lau Chor-wah and Tsar Teh-yun. He has composed a number of new guqin pieces and has given numerous public performances as a guqin soloist in Hong Kong. He has also performed in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Taipei, Dublin and London. One of his compositions, "Composition in Yifan Mode", has been selected as one of the test pieces in the Grade 6 guqin examination in the Mainland. He is the vice-chairman of the Deyin Qin Society, and an adjunct assistant professor and instrumental instructor on the guqin in the Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has had two albums, "The Oil-Lamp Flickered" and "Autumn Moon and Winter Frost", published. Besides containing traditional pieces, the albums also include his own compositions.
