A spokesman for the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) announced today (July 2) that the 12 beaches, which were closed yesterday (July 1) following sightings of a shark in nearby waters of Deep Bay in Lamma Island, were reopened today.
The affected beaches were Hung Shing Yeh Beach and Lo So Shing Beach in the Islands District; and Deep Water Bay Beach, Repulse Bay Beach, Middle Bay Beach, South Bay Beach, Chung Hom Kok Beach, St. Stephen's Beach, Stanley Main Beach, Turtle Cove Beach, Shek O Beach and Big Wave Bay Beach in Southern District, Hong Kong Island.
The spokesman said the department's shark prevention net maintenance contractor had completed inspection of the shark prevention nets at all affected beaches last night and this morning and confirmed that there was no big fish inside the enclosed zones of the nets and that the nets were in good condition.
Marine Police and Government Flying Service had completed checks and searches in the nearby waters of Deep Bay this morning, and confirmed that no shark was sighted.
The spokesman appealed to swimmers to swim in the enclosed zones of the shark prevention nets for safety's sake, adding that LCSD staff would remain vigilant and strengthen patrols in the swimming zones.
