The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has invited renowned local stage designer Tsang Man-tung to host a lecture series entitled "Six Steps to Scenography", to be held in February and March.
Tsang Man-tung graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and has received numerous awards in the field, including Best Set Design, Best Costume Design and Best Make-up and Image Design at the Hong Kong Drama Awards. In 2003 and 2008, he received the Rising Artists Award and the Award for Best Artist (Theatre) respectively at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards presented by Hong Kong Arts Development Council. In 2009, he received an Honorable Mention for Set Design at World Stage Design, and the award helped him to advance in his profession. Tsang presented his solo exhibition "Disjunctive-coding Exhibition" (2002) in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Hong Kong City Hall and published "Scenography: Transcend to the Beyond" in 2007. He is currently the Examiner (Drama) of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and a Member of the Art Form Panel (Theatre) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Topic : Theatre Aesthetics and the Performing Arts
Content: This talk will cover the relationships between stage design, lighting design, costume design and music composition and various forms of performing arts like drama, theatre, musicals and Western and Chinese opera. The scenographic features for different forms of the performing arts will also be discussed.

Topic : International Stage Design Concepts
Content: This talk will cover the concepts of theatre design through the ages, from Greek tragedy, Roman theatre, mediaeval European theatre and Renaissance drama to Shakespearean theatre and 19th century theatre. The most influential set design styles and the impact they had on scenography will also be discussed, with a special focus on two prominent figures in the history of stagecraft, Adolphe Appia and Edward Gordon Craig.
February 21
Topic : Development and Trends in Scenography
Content: This talk will focus on theatre design from the 20th century to the present, including design trends in Europe, England and America, as well as the influence of the Industrial Revolution and the World Wars on Western theatre design. There will also be discussion of exemplary works from the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space over the years, as well as a summary of contemporary trends in theatre design.

Topic : Design in Practice - the Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan
Content: In this talk, the speaker will share his experiences of stage design in the Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan, sharing his thoughts on topics such as their different aesthetic considerations and challenges encountered.

Topic : The Importance of Costumes in the History of Performing Arts
Content: Costumes played an important part in the performing arts long before scenographic art was fully developed. This talk will focus on the history of costumes and their functions in relation to the performing arts, with particular emphasis on characteristic features of selected periods and genres, such as Greek tragedy and Chinese opera.

Topic : What Makes a Theatre Designer
Content: The speaker will talk about how a theatre designer can establish his or her own style, conduct research and analyse scripts, and the way to enhance inspiration and self-cultivation.
All lectures will be held at 7.45pm at the Exhibition Hall of Sheung Wan Civic Centre.
