Campaign boosts awareness of mobile security (with photos)
**********************************************************

The public was reminded of the security risks and issues related to the adoption of mobile and other emerging technologies at a seminar today (December 7).

As part of the Hong Kong Clean PC Day 2011 campaign, the full-day seminar featured presentations by representatives from the Government, industry associations and solution providers on a range of topics from security threats and considerations for adopting mobile technologies and cloud computing, to safe use of social networking and ways to manage security in the new computing era.

"With the proliferation of new smartphones and other mobile gadgets, the use of these powerful devices for work and leisure is becoming ubiquitous. But at the same time they significantly increase the risks of data loss and leakage, and raise privacy concerns," a spokesman for the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) said.

"The public and businesses must bear security in mind when using mobile devices for communications and conducting transactions, and be cautious in protecting the devices and the data stored therein," the spokesman said.

Hong Kong Clean PC Day is an annual campaign that has been jointly organised by the OGCIO, the Hong Kong Police Force and the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Co-ordination Centre since 2005. It aims to raise public awareness of emerging security threats and provide tips for the general public to mitigate such risks through a series of public engagement activities including school visits, seminars and competitions.

As part of the campaign this year, a screensaver design contest with the theme of mobile security was organised. An award presentation ceremony was held at today's seminar.
