"Foreign Affiliates Trade in Services Statistics of Hong Kong"

With increasing globalisation of the world economy, it becomes popular for multinational enterprises to provide services to customers in another economy through setting up affiliated companies abroad.

In view of the growing importance of services supplied via this mode, C&SD has developed a statistical framework for compiling relevant statistics, known as foreign affiliates trade in services (FATS) statistics.  This feature article introduces the statistical system for compiling inward FATS statistics, and presents selected inward FATS statistics of Hong Kong in 2009.  It also gives a brief account of the development in the compilation of Hong Kong's outward FATS statistics.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Trade in Services Statistics Section, C&SD (Tel.: 2802 1350).

"Socio-economic Characteristics of Hong Kong Residents Making Personal Travel to the Mainland of China, 2010"

Analysed by sex, the proportion of personal trips made by males (53%) was higher.  Analysed by age, the highest proportion of personal trips was made by residents in the age group 50-59 (24%).

Among the trips in respect of personal travel by Hong Kong residents to the Mainland, 26.1 million person-trips were made by employed persons.  Of this, the highest proportion was made by residents working in the import/export, wholesale and retail trades, and accommodation and food service activities (29%).

"Hong Kong's External Trade in High Technology Products and Technology Balance of Payments, 2000 to 2010"

Technology is a crucial aspect of economic development and competitiveness of an economy, especially in the context of economic globalisation.  Statistics on external trade in high technology products and technology balance of payments are useful for gauging international transfer of technology and know-how as well as reflecting an economy's capability of assimilating technology.  This feature article analyses the performance of Hong Kong's external trade in high technology products and the latest developments in technology balance of payments during the period of 2000 to 2010.

"Results of the 2009/10 Household Expenditure Survey"

C&SD conducts a Household Expenditure Survey (HES) once every five years.  The main objective of the HES is to collect up-to-date information on the expenditure patterns of households in Hong Kong for updating the expenditure weights used in the compilation of the Consumer Price Indices.

This feature article gives a brief account of the methodology and major findings of the 2009/10 HES.  Analyses of household expenditure patterns by household characteristics such as household size, household composition, number of earners in the household, etc. are also presented.

The survey results showed that on average, a household spent $21,623 per month on food, consumer goods and services in 2009/10.  Analysed on a per capita basis, the average monthly expenditure was $7,137.
