The Government gazetted a notice today (August 19) declaring that the operation of the 18 District Councils (DCs) will be suspended from September 15, 2011 to facilitate the holding of the fourth ordinary election of the DCs.
A Home Affairs Department spokesman said the decision was made in accordance with section 28 of the District Councils Ordinance (Chapter 547).
"The suspension will last until the last day of the current term on December 31, 2011. It aims to provide a level playing field for all candidates in the election, regardless of whether he or she is an incumbent DC member," he said.
