The Director of Marine, Mr Roger Tupper, this afternoon (March 25) presented commendations to 28 people who risked their lives to rescue others in Hong Kong waters last year.
The awardees were 17 police officers, six staff members of the Hong Kong Pilots Association Limited and five members of the public. Among them, a police constable was specially commended for taking part in rescuing others in two separate incidents last July and September.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr Tupper paid tribute to all the awardees for their selfless acts.
"Without brave and public-spirited people, some lives would have been lost and families bereaved last year. On behalf of the Marine Department, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to our heroes, who displayed exceptional bravery and mighty courage," he said.
Mr Tupper said that the Marine Department, being the administrator of the port, is always striving to provide a safe environment for marine activities in Hong Kong.
To promote safe navigation, a seminar was held in January this year to alert port users to the importance of adequate safety preparations and contingency measures before sailing, especially when navigating under restricted visibility.
The department's commitment also extends to the safety of recreational boating activities in the water sports high season. In this regard, an educational seminar will be held in May and related publicity activities will be arranged in the coming months.
Through joint efforts by the Marine Department, the Marine Police and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, public awareness of marine safety has been enhanced.
