Puppet theatre to perform "Alibaba and Forty Thieves"
*****************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has invited puppet theatre specialists Naive Theatre Liberec (Czech Republic) to Hong Kong to perform the famous story "Alibaba and Forty Thieves".

Alibaba and Forty Thieves is a well-known story from the medieval Arabic  collection, "Thousand and One Nights". Alibaba discovers a cave, occupied by thieves and lots of treasure, and brings home some gold coins. His greedy brother Kasim then forces Alibaba to take him to the cave.

Naive Theatre Liberec transports the story to the fascinating realm of puppet theatre, with a production combining art, humour and oriental charm. In the performance, the main characters are played by skillful puppeteers and their puppets, while the thieves, who form a forty-member choir, are played by a mechanically-controlled prop. Don't miss this chance to see a genuine puppet show from the Czech Republic!

Naive Theatre Liberec (Czech Republic) was established in 1949. It is one of the earliest professional puppet theatres in the former Czechoslovakia and organises an international festival, MATERINKA, in the city of Liberec. Since the 1990s, the theatre has produced three highly successful performances, namely "The Headless Knight", "Alibaba and Forty Thieves" and "Alˆqna or Petrin Tower on the Other Side of the World", staged by director Tomas Dvorak and set designer Ivan Nesveda. The troupe has toured worldwide, including Europe, Mexico, India, Canada and Pakistan. The Theatre has also participated at many international festivals, including the well-known UNIMA (in Budapest, Hungary) in 1996 and Rijeka of Croatia in 2004.
