Drug traffickers jailed

     Three men, aged between 30 and 32, were convicted of trafficking in dangerous drugs and were sentenced to imprisonment of 13 and 21 years respectively at the Court of First Instance today (November 11).

     The Court heard that officers of Narcotics Bureau conducted an ambush operation at a shopping mall in Sha Tin on August 17, 2009 officers spotted two men placed some parcels into two rental storage lockers in the shopping mall and left, and then they found a third man approached the lockers afterwards and intended to pick up the parcels. The operation immediately turned overt and the officers arrested all three men, aged 30, 31 and 32 respectively, in the vicinity. A total of two kilograms of cocaine worth about $1.6 million were seized from the lockers.

     Following a house search in Ma On Shan, the officers turned up another 31 kilograms of cocaine powder, 2.75 kilograms of crack cocaine and some manufacturing and packaging equipments. The drugs seized in the operation worth over $28 million.

     The trio were charged with three counts of trafficking in dangerous drugs and they pleaded guilty in the Court of First Instance today. The 31-year old man and the 32-year-old man were sentenced to imprisonment of 13 years. In sentencing the 30-year-old man whose residence was seized about 31 kilograms of cocaine powder, the judge had adopted a starting point of 32 years¡¯ imprisonment. The man was eventually sentenced to 21 years¡¯ imprisonment after taking into consideration of his guilty plea.
