New Independent Police Complaints Council chairman appointed

    The Government today (May 23) announced the appointment of Mr Jat Sew-tong as Chairman of the Independent Police Complaints Council (IPCC).  The appointment will take effect from June 1 for a term of two years.

    Mr Jat will succeed the incumbent IPCC chairman Mr Ronny Wong Fook-hum, whose term of appointment will end on May 31.

    Mr Jat is active in public service.  Among other appointments, he is currently the Chairman of the Criminal and Law Enforcement Injuries Compensation Boards and a Deputy Chairman of the Administrative Appeals Board.

    The IPCC is an independent civilian body responsible for monitoring and reviewing the investigation of complaints against members of the police force.  It comprises a chairman, three vice-chairmen and 14 non-official members. 

    "The IPCC plays an important role in ensuring public confidence in the police complaints system," a Government spokesman said.  "We are most grateful to Mr Ronny Wong for his leadership and contributions to the IPCC during his term of chairmanship.  We look forward to the continued effective operation of the IPCC under the leadership of Mr Jat."
