Six employers ordered to pay MPF arrears

The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

    The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (April 29) obtained one order for payment of outstanding MPF contributions at about $78,000 against an employer in the District Court. Meanwhile, the MPFA pursued five claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $86,000 on behalf of nine employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.

    The District Court today issued judgment against one employer, Masaka Japanese Restaurant Limited trading as Masaka Japanese Restaurant. The defendant was ordered to pay the MPFA the sum of $78,674.8, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to 93 employees of the defendant.

    Meanwhile, at the tribunal's hearing today, five defendants, namely Kim Yong Il trading as and Kim Pyung Kwon formerly trading as Three-five Korean Restaurant, Chase Wise Limited, Sky Harmony Enterprises Limited, Wong Suk Ling trading as Grands Way Trading Company and Lee Kai Leung Anthony trading as Advanced Digi Photo Centre, did not appear. In their absence, the adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA the sums of $49,424.52, $25,081.25, $5,369.96, $3,832.5 and $2,362.5, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.

    The amounts awarded at the District Court and the tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees¡¯ MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The District Court ordered the defendant to pay costs of $930. The tribunal ordered the respective defendants to pay $300, $158, $175, $150 and $190 as the costs in respect of the claims.
