Learning to play a musical instrument not only helps young people develop their musical talent, but also stimulates creativity and enhances their interest in art.
Organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Instrumental Music Training Scheme is now recruiting intermediate year-one and advanced year-one trainees for 2008-09. Deadline for applications is May 13.
With an annual enrolment of nearly 5,000 trainees, from elementary to advanced level, the scheme provides training in string, wind and Chinese musical instruments, such as violin, viola, cello, harp, flute, saxophone, clarinet, French horn, erhu, dizi, suona and zhongruan. Supplementary courses in musicianship and theory will provide trainees with a comprehensive course of music training.
Weekly group lessons of one hour each are conducted in Cantonese at the Music Office's five music centres - Wan Chai, Kwun Tong, Mong Kok, Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan. Annual tuition fees of $2,420 for intermediate level and $3,190 for advanced level are payable in four instalments. Young players aged 8 to 18 are welcome to apply.
Leaflets and application forms are now available at all music centres of the Music Office or the Music Office website: www.lcsd.gov.hk/musicoffice. Qualified applicants will be invited to attend an audition in June and notified of audition results by mid-August, with training beginning in September.
