Hong Kong emission inventory for 2014 published
***********************************************

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) today (May 31) published the 2014 Emission Inventory for Hong Kong.

Every year, the EPD compiles a local emission inventory for six key air pollutants from various sources including power plants, shipping, motor vehicles, aviation and other combustion sources. The six pollutants are sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), respirable suspended particulates (RSP or PM10), fine suspended particulates (FSP or PM2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOC) and carbon monoxide (CO).

Hong Kong's total emissions in 2014 were 31 710 tonnes of SO2, 109 570 tonnes of NOx, 5 900 tonnes of RSP, 4 600 tonnes of FSP, 27 020 tonnes of VOC and 65 930 tonnes of CO. Except for SO2, the levels of the pollutants in 2014 were between 3 and 17 per cent lower compared to 2013, mainly due to the measures implemented to control emissions from vessels and motor vehicles. Emissions of SO2 remained more or less the same as that of in 2013.

Details of the 2014 emission inventory and the 2014 emission report can be found on the EPD website at www.epd.gov.hk/epd/english/environmentinhk/air/data/emission_inve.html.
