The Thematic Household Survey Report No. 54 is published by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) today (April 28).
This publication contains key findings of the Thematic Household Survey conducted during June to August 2014. The survey was the 15th round of the series conducted since 2000 to collect information on information technology usage and penetration.
Findings of the 2014 survey revealed that continually more people had knowledge of using personal computer (PC). The percentage of persons aged 10 and over who had knowledge of using PC at the time of enumeration was 77.4% in 2014, up from 74.6% in 2012. The increase was particularly remarkable among the elderly, i.e. persons aged 65 and over, from 16.2% to 23.5%.
Moreover, significantly more people had used Internet service in 2014 when compared to 2012. The percentage of persons aged 10 and over who had used Internet service during the 12 months before enumeration increased to 79.9% in 2014, from 72.9% in 2012. In particular, the increase was substantial among persons aged 45 - 64 (from 64.2% to 79.7%) and the elderly (from 13.1% to 24.0%).
Findings of the survey also showed that the usage of smartphone had become more popular. Close to 5 million persons aged 10 and over had smartphone in 2014, around 1.5 million more than that in 2012. The smartphone penetration rate rose sharply, from 54.0% in 2012 to 77.2% in 2014. The increase was particularly remarkable among the elderly. About 1 in 4 persons aged 65 and over had smartphone in 2014, compared to only around 7 in 100 persons aged 65 and over in 2012.
Detailed findings of the survey, including those on other items, such as usage of online purchasing services and electronic Government services, are presented in the publication.
